Description

KOYLI Class 55 Deltic (Pristine) Sound Bachmann Model 55002, 'King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry', in BR blue (preserved), DCC sound.

History of the locomotive: derived from The English Electric DPI prototype, the British Rail Class 55 diesel locomotives were built between 1961 and 1962. Designed for the high-speed express passenger services between London King's Cross and Edinburgh, they replaced the long-haul steam locomotives on this route. They gained the nickname "Deltic" from the extremely powerful twin Napier 'Deltic' engines that had been originally designed for ship-bound use with the Royal Navy. Twenty-two locomotives were produced and predominantly used on the East Coast Main Line. Locomotives were initially assigned to the following three locomotive depots: Finsbury Park in London, Gateshead in the Northeast and Haymarket in Edinburgh. They initially arrived factory painted in a unique two-tone green livery with highlighted cab window surrounds. All were later named; Gateshead and Haymarket locomotives after regiments of the British Army, whilst Finsbury Park locomotives followed the LNER tradition of naming locomotives after winning racehorses. With a top service speed of 100mph, service continued right through the 1960's and 70's and their ubiquitous blue livery symbolised British Rail operations during this period. As a new generation of coaches came into existence in the early 1970's, many locomotives were refurbished to include electric train heating (ETH) and air brake equipment in preparation for InterCity operations. Withdrawal commenced in 1978, following the introduction of the faster 125mph high-speed trains. After the final Deltic hauled service train on 31st December 1981, many of the class had each completed over two million miles of service.

Six locomotives are currently preserved, as well as the prototype English Electric DPI 'Deltic', which is currently part of the National Collection at Shildon.

The KOYLI Class 55 Deltic (Pristine) Sound Bachmann locomotive model measures length: 29 cm x height: 5.5 cm x width: 3 cm and is mains powered. The box includes the locomotive model, instructions and a warranty.
